The Sport Business in the Geneva Region

The Sport Business in the Geneva Region

Professional and amateur sports play a central role in the economy in the Lake Geneva region. Sport is a transversal sector composed of a multitude of traditional economic sectors such as sports infrastructures, sport clubs, local/national/international sports federations, the media, sports tourism, and the production of sportwear.

Geneva is home to the RTS Sport news hub. It is the largest and most important media entity dealing with sports on multiple media (TV, radio, Internet, Social Media). RTS Sport broadcasts more than 2’500 hours of sports programs per year and has developed a significant digital presence.

Sport is particularly unifying in Switzerland, bringing fans together around common experiences and emotions to overcome regional and linguistic borders. The guided tour of the RTS sports newsroom and studio offers EMBA alumni a unique opportunity to experience the backstage of sports news production at the RTS headquarters in Geneva.

Guest speakers will illustrate the role of two types of players in the sports economy in our region: sports clubs and businesses embedded in the local community, such as the Société Nautique de Genève, the media, and international sports federations.

Their presentations will highlight issues such as the role of media and information technology, women’s sport, and the importance of fostering the visibility of a wide variety of sports disciplines.
